non-negotiables on purchases

When you read this title, you may wonder what it has to do with growing into yourself, hehe. Let me explain. I love to shop, especially for shoes and handbags. I am also quite impulsive with these purchases, which I’m working on. Although I love a good deal and will find them, there are other times I am so “in love” with a handbag that I’ll pay a pretty penny for it. At the time, and for a short while later, I will love on the item. Unfortunately, the bliss doesn’t last long and soon I come across another item that tickles my fancy. Obviously this track record is not healthy for me and my wallet. :) So it hit me the other day- why not have non-negotiables on big ticket purchases? I’ve heard about this concept with finding a partner and we utilized it with purchasing our home, so why not on my purchases?! I know this may sound silly, but I’m discovering that the issue I have is, I “fall in love” with an item more for its look and feel at the expense of its practicality and my non-negotiables. So by having non-negotiables, when I come across something I want, I can go over my list in my head and decide how it measures up. This systematic approach can help me with sound decision making. It’s also helping me to grow by discerning what I (practically) need and assisting with minimizing my impulsivity and instant gratification that always leave me thirsty for more. Let’s see how I go… :)

Having non-negotiables can pertain to many areas in your life, such as finding a fulfilling job, a partner, the right school for your child, etc. I have found them to be valuable when I take the time to create them and commit to abiding by them. Where in your life do you think creating a list of non-negotiables would be helpful?
